Toló

Leaving Astrous

We left Astrous shortly after midday on Tuesday 13 September headed for Toló, a small town about 10 miles away on the other side of the Argolic Gulf. As we left Astrous we passed quite close to the large cave close east the harbour, a spot much frequented by local hire boats.
Toló ahead of us

There was about 10 knots of wind from the northwest so we had an easy sail across the gulf.Since we knew that we would need plenty of water over the coming days, we took the opportunity to run the generator and make water whilst we were en route too.
Ak Rouis

Closing with the Ak Rouis, the headland just to the southwest of Toló, the wind became more variable, so we lowered the sails and motored the final stretch towards the town.

Toló is now primarily a tourist town, with a long sandy beach and plenty of holiday homes and restuarants. But there are still a few fishing boats based here, operating off the quays, which are also used by small ferries and tripper boats. It was likely, therefore, that the quays would be too busy for us to use them, so our options were to anchor off the town’s beach, or to anchor close to the island which sits half a mile or so south of the town itself.

With relatively light winds forecast from no particular direction, we decided to go in near to the island. The water is relatively deep here but we managed to find ourselves a good spot where the anchor dug in well and where we could lay out sufficient scope to allow BV to swing without being blown uncomfortably close to the shore.

The scenery was quite lovely and, since this was to be our last clear water anchorage, we took a long swim with snorkels and fins. And we are so glad that we did! We found beautifully clear water and a profusion of fish, interesting rocks, weed and sea urchins. It felt a bit like we were swimming in someone’s well-stocked aquarium!

To make it even better, as the sun started to dip below the horizon, we shared this lovely spot with no other yachts. It was a lovely ‘final’ evening of the cruise before moving to Koiládhia in the morning and the start of the hard work of making BV ready for the winter.
