Culebrita to the Turks and Caicos (Day 2, Saturday 19 January 2019)

Dawn picture on a moving boat!

The overnight conditions were extremely benign, and we averaged a little over 5½ knots.  These light winds are expected to continue for the next 12-24 hours before we started to see the beginnings of the cold front effect.
Dawn on day 2 of our passage

That is forecast to bring a little more wind which will improve our average speed but which will also bring a larger swell to make things a little rolly.

It will be nice to have the extra speed to get closer to our destination before the really strong winds hit but we also would prefer to enter the Cockburn Harbour on South Caicos during the daylight so if we go too fast we may have to hold off until after dawn. The entrance gap in the reef is apparently well marked and lit but inside in the it is fairly shallow and we will need to choose our anchoring spot carefully.  That’s always much easier in the daylight when you can see the sea colour and know where the particularly shallow bits are and can avoid them.  We also have no idea how busy it will be; hopefully there will be space for us to sit out the unpleasant weather there.
Our hitchhiker moth – it’s around 9 cm long

Today’s excitement was finding that we had a hitchhiker on board; a huge moth.  We have no idea when he/she arrived but it shows no interest in moving on. So long as it doesn’t go below and eat up our soft furnishings we’ll leave it alone.

The rest of the day was very relaxed. We ran the watermaker to fill our tanks, worked on writing up some blog entries and just let BV mosey along as the miles slowly counted down.
