Nísiros

Tílos slippping away behind us

The gentle afternoon breeze had give us an opportunity to head on from Tílos a day early. So, by mid-afternoon on 19 April BV was gliding northwards at 5.5-6.5 knots. It was very pleasant and gentle sailing.

Ahead of us was the volcanic island of Nísiros. There was nothing complicated about the navigation; as we cleared the headland north of Órmos Livádhiou the island of Nísiros was already in view.
The north coast of Nísiros

We made our way around the east side of the island where we found that the wind dropped because of the wind shadow. Just west of the northern tip of the island is Palon harbour, our destination for the night.
Palon harbour

By 1800 in the evening we were tied up in the harbour almost in the exact spot that we had moored in during our last visit. The harbour entrance silts up and so we entered carefully with 2.7 metres as the lowest depth that we saw in the narrow gap.

We have already visited Nísiros early in September 2014 when we explored the island pretty thoroughly as you can see from this link. The volcano in the centre of the island is particularly spectacular but there are also some ancient forts to explore and interesting towns. As a result, this stop would be very brief; just a night stop with no sightseeing. Tomorrow is forecast to have stiff southeasterly winds which we planned to use to push us past Kos and on to the island of Kalimnos. Hopefully we will be able to relax there whilst the meltemi blows through.
