BV maintenance at Arrecife Lanzarote

The cause of our generator issues
Today was an awesome day! Yes, I’m nearly 2 weeks behind on blog entries but, instead of writing and sorting photos, I spent the day looking at our generator issue. The big result is that we have found the problem. Hurrah! A failing immersion heater in our hot water system was leaking a tiny amount of water but enough to short circuit the 240 volt earth and neutral cables intermittently. The electrical RCD protection systems are so sensitive that they were tripping out the generator supply and also sent the very clever battery charger into a state of confused lock-down to protect itself.
The new immersion heater element fitted and ready to be tested

A phone call to Merlin in the UK has provided the right actions to reset the battery charger and we had a spare immersion heater element on board which we have now successfully fitted to cure the root cause of the problem. Instead of the next week being dominated by trying to get BV to an approved Fischer Panda agent [Ed/Financial Manager: and the resultant unnecessary bill], we now have a happy generator, a battery charger and immersion heater that are working again and, most importantly, our independence back. Time to start exploring the Canary Islands (and write a few more blog entries!!!!).
