Houat

Houat, about 10 miles from the entrance to the Golfe du Morbihan, has some spectacular beaches. We anchored off Treac’h er Gourhe on Thursday 6 September and spent the afternoon swimming and, despite being slathered in suncream, getting sunburnt.

The only issue was that the beach would be exposed if the NE wind got up overnight so, after a wonderful lazy afternoon, as evening came we motored through the shallows to the SE of the island and tried to find a better spot for the night. We had thought of anchoring off the SW-facing beach at Treac’h Salus but that was crammed with around 30 yachts; clearly a popular location. A little further to the west though we found a gem of a spot at Portz Plous.  Better still, we had it almost to ourselves.

Dinner of roasted Mediterranean vegetables and chicken tasted all the better in the cockpit which was bathed in orangey evening light; as did the Madeira with which we toasted the sunset.
