The obvious restaurants in Gibraltar tend to proudly advertise their pub grub fayre; British fish and chips is the standard headline dish. However, in tucked away spots we have really enjoyed the Prawns Pil Pil which seems to be a specialty of this area and to the east.
Prawns are fried with chunks of garlic, some chilli and paprika in olive oil and butter. Sizzling hot they are brough to the table in small terracotta dishes giving off a lovely garlicy aroma. They taste great and the flavoured olive oil and butter is fantastic for dunking crusty bread. We’ve tried making or own onboard. The first attempt was good but definitely more garlic and chilli are required for the next batch. I think we’ll enjoy sundowners all the more as we experiment to perfect the ingredients ratios for this tapas dish.
