Karavómilos

Mr Mouse: 2    BV crew: Nil

Mr Mouse outwitted us. The sticky mouse traps’ box promised 100% success; our Mr Mouse clearly has some non-stick shoes and danced a jig on the sticky stuff whilst having a go at the peanut butter bait. Tom, Dick and Harry, the conventional mouse traps, fared equally badly. Mr Mouse manged to eat the nutella off the little pieces of pitta without springing the trap. We shall have to adjust our tactics!

Slightly distracted by the ‘Mouse Wars’ we slipped our lines at Volos late morning on 30 July. With no wind we motored south towards the entrance to the gulf of Volos. It was starting to feel like our local cruising ground as ee had been here so often. Fortunately, as we neared the entrance the wind built and we were able to sail out of the Gulf and turn west which put us almost directly downwind. Feeling slightly lazy we just poled out the genoa rather than hoisting the MPS but it got us sailing along nicely.
The northern end of the Evia Channel
We sailed past the northern entrance to the Evia Channel and on towards Stilís. Stilís sounds like quite an industrial town and port which didn’t particulalry appeal for a night stop. However, 5 miles to the east of Stilís is a bay which seemed to offer good shelter from the easterly wind and which looked to fit the bill for the night.

Sailing along this coastline the views to the north were very pretty. As we got closer to our anchorage we could see small remote beaches busy with locals enjoying the sun and, in the distance, deep valleys and craggy ridgelines.
The anchorage at Karavómilos
The anchorage at Karavómilos was very similar, with a couple of small beaches and beach bars and the odd villa or two on the coastline. We anchored just off the coast at 7pm and, over a glass of wine, planned the re-deployment of Tom, Dick and Harry.
