Approaching Anchor Bay |
Just over 4 miles away from Comino is Anchor Bay in northwest Malta. With the prevailing wind this is not normally a good place to try to anchor in but with such calm weather it seemed a shame not to take a look.
The primary reason for visiting is the bay is that there is still a whole film set there. In 1980 Robert Altman shot his film ‘Popeye’, starring Robin Williams, here and the whole set has been left as a tourist attraction.

We anchored just outside the shallow inner bay and got a great view of Popeye Village.
Totally topsy-turvy there didn’t seem to be an upright building in the village; very much in the theme of Disneyland!
A pre-lunch swim took us into the inner bay for a different perspective on the village. Having been here we might even watch the film when we get home although I don’t believe that it was much of a blockbuster [Ed: It actually grosses over $60 million worldwide but was still assessed to be a flop].
With a sight-seeing swim and lunch all complete, it was time to head out again. Our timing was perfect as, courtesy of AIS, we could see Dinah heading south from the northern end of the island. We were both going to take advantage of the calm weekend weather to visit another bay on the western side of Malta.
