Castro de Baroña
On 22 May we cycled 11 kilometres south of Portosín along the coast road to visit the Iron Age settlement, Castro de Baroña. It was far better than we had imagined.
The settlement was out on a headland, which would have made it easier to defend, and there is some shelter from the northeasterly winds from large stone outcrop.
The layout of the village was so clear. The perimeter wall and defences are still standing and you could easily imagine thatched roofs on the round walled buildings.
We were the only visitors on the site and it felt strange to be clambering around on the overlooking rocks knowing that the inhabitants of the village had done done the same thousands of years ago.
It was a spectacular place to visit. No entrance fee and we met just 2 other visitors when we walked back up to the road where we had left our bikes. Our ride back against the warm wind was energetic but very pleasant. The lovely smell of gorse, eucalyptus and pine from the wooded coastline and hills above was surprisingly strong, even when we weren’t passing through a wood.
