No trip to A Coruña would be complete without a visit to the Torre de Hércules.
Legend has it that its construction was one of the labours of Hercules but it was actually built by the Romans in the 1st century AD. That makes it the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It's around 50 metres high and is incredibly imposing on the wind and wave battered headland just to the east of A Coruña.
The exterior stone was built in 1790 but inside, apart from the staircase and cupola, it is original Roman.
On the next headland is the Parque Escultórico with its strange sculptures and wind horn; around 6 or 7 metres high. Well worth a visit for seeing both the sculptures and to watch the waves crash onto the granite rocks below.
