With the castle visit
completed and BV well stocked, we left Bodrum at 5 pm for a 5 mile passage to a
small bay to the south west of Bodrum known as The Aquarium. This destination
is on most of the daytime tripper boat routes but our late departure meant that
the tripper boats had all gone by the time we got there. The short sail allowed
Alex and Lucy to start to get familiar with working BV and we arrived with just
enough light to have a swim before Alex put together some excellent mojito
cocktails for sundowners. Time seemed to fly and after a nice dinner in the
cockpit and some stargazing (as well as a look at the nightclub laser show which
was just visible) it was nearly midnight.

Ancient water cistern |
In the morning Nicky and
I snorkelled around the shallow parts of the bay and agreed that the anchorage
did justify its name. There were lots of fish of all sorts of varieties to look
at making it a very pleasant swim. Maybe I need an underwater camera? [Ed (and
financial controller): Hmmmm!]
Even better was that the
wind was already blowing from the west. Our plan for the day was to sail south
20 miles to the ancient harbour at Knidos on the end of the Datça peninsula. Nicky
and I had visited ancient Knidos in April and thought that it would be an
ideal spot for Alex and Lucy to explore. The anchor was therefore raised at
1030 on 9 September and we set off south with all sails raised and BV making a
very healthy 8.5 knots through the water.
