Wall Bay

the Lycian Cruise in Company

Robin and Suzie from Bubbly Lady 2 have worked tirelessly for the past several months to organise the CA Lycian Cruise in Company. Tucked into the north-western corner of Wall Bay is a restaurant with 2 long, slightly rickety wooden jetties. As we turned into the bay the radio came alive with yachts all descending upon the venue. Robin and Suzie were waiting for us on the jetty and, on the radio, provided a 'yacht traffic service' to manage our arrival and to get us into the correct berths. There were 12 yachts in all. One of the missing yachts' crews didn't miss out on the party because they left their yacht in the marina at Göçek and cadged a lift down to Wall Bay with fellow cruisers. The final yacht, however, had to stay in Göçek, awaiting the arrival of the 2 members of their crew who were flying in that evening.

Wall Bay is a delightful spot with clear water, turtles (which some people were lucky enough to swim with) and the electric buzz of an excited and lively team getting ready for a party and a sailing adventure together. We took the opportunity to wander along the pontoon and meet everyone; a very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

We also explored the immediate surroundings of the covered restaurant and open air venue for pre-dinner drinks.
Whilst we were getting to know the other rally participants and settling in, the restaurant team prepared the food for our party. A whole lamb was roasted over a roaring fire and tantalising wafts of the cooking meat blew across the jetties. The only slight concern was a few dark cumulus clouds building above the ridge line.

The anticipated rain finally started part way through our pre-dinner drinks. The welcome speech had just been completed as the heavens opened and so we quickly  grabbed the large bucket of Pimms and rapidly retreated under cover.

Rain is very unusual at this time of year and so as we gathered under the wooden sunscreen above the tables the restaurant staff were actually clambering around on top of it nailing out tarpaulins to try to make it waterproof. A little different but it added to the fun of the evening.

Shortly afterwards the spit-roast lamb was paraded with the restaurant's grandpa playing a bamboo whistle and we all tucked into a fabulous mezze whilst the lamb was carved. The flavours from the open fire cooking made the lamb a very special dish and we all ate to bursting point. It was a fantastic start to the cruise and a great way to meet the other crews.
